Originally from Ireland but now based in Manchester, Shunya (Alan Keary) is a multi-instrumentalist and producer with a strong musical heritage, and has been writing and producing music from the age of fourteen. Mountain Gazer is the opening track to his latest EP Mountain Gazer Pt. 2.

The lead track is a bit of a musical magpie, drawing in influences from jazz, ambient, drum and bass which effortlessly mesh with skittering percussion, irregular tempo and the sexiest flute solo you’ll ever hear. On DoBeDo Keary uses a similar template but with sax loops and vocal melodies that leave the track inhabiting a musical landscape somewhere between Yes and Bonobo. Exercise the Thoughts creates a more traditional downbeat vibe, but with enough musical and vocal tricks to make your ears tingle. Rounding off the EP are a pair of remixes; A Nest of Glorious Sound has been reworked into a lush ambient piece of mood music by Frameworks whilst Seconds Away / Miles Apart has been transformed in to a classy piece of off-kilter, mutated techno by Stanky.

Mountain Gazer Pt. 2 is a great E.P. easy to listen to, full of musical and vocal surprises and it reveals more with each listen. A special mention goes to vocalist Hayley Phillipa Williams whose contributions bring an extra dimension to the tracks, like a Kate Bush singing soul music!

Mountain Gazer Pt. 2 is out now and is available to buy on Bandcamp and to stream on Spotify.
