Pussy Riot are many things: political activists, feminists and artists to name but three. But the central core of what they do is the music they produce, which encapsulates all those facets of the band. And the music is without exception catchy, sometimes challenging and sometimes provocative as you can see on the somewhat disturbing video for Police State!

Pussy Riot excel at fusing the pop and the political, and Police State is probably one of their best tracks so far! A laid back, stripped down electro arrangement works as a foil to the layered vocals, whose nursery rhyme call and response feel reinforces the forthright lyrics. The medium isn’t always the message, sometimes the message is the medium and we have Pussy Riot to thank for that.

Police State is out now, follow the link for more details on streaming and downloading just follow this link. Check out their Mediazona website which covers what is happening in Russian courtrooms, police stations, prisons and labour camps.

The group are also currently working with Les Enfants Terribles at the Saatchi Gallery in London, staging an immersive, political piece detailing the trials and tribulations the band and others have suffered at the hands of the Russian criminal system.
