Sweden’s Nina Kinert really has served up a musical and visual masterpiece in collaboration with Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring on new track Chapped Lips. Worthy of standing tall with her previous best-known tracks Beast and Through Your Eyes, it’s a wonderful piece of anthemic electronic indie.

Nina Kinert has a voice that it’s hard to describe on paper, which hints of Ionna Lee and Kate Bush competing with a folkish, impish flair. The track has that Serge Gainsbourg style knack of taking something every day and mundane like chapped lips and turning it in to an eccentric yet apt metaphor for affairs of the heart and soul.

The song and arrangement bring out nuances I’ve not noticed in Herring’s voce before, inviting comparisons with Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson at times in its careworn, life-lived atmosphere. Chapped Lips brings see both artists breaking new musical and artistic ground and even if it didn’t, it’s still five minutes of soaring, majestic pop.
