When we think of bands with a hint of the cinematic sound of the 60s and 70s, the electronic pop sound isn’t one that comes immediately to mind, but there’s a real hint of that silver screen inspiration in the opulent electropop sound of Athens/Vienna based duo Marva Von Theo and their track Dead in Berlin.

Athens-based singer-songwriter Marva Voulgari supplies a vocal performance that thrills and chills, with a rich and imperious timbre that oozes emotional intenseness mixed with a touch of sang-froid. The track has a pensive air, as if straight out of a classic movie, as Voulgari and Theo Foinidis uncoil string inspired synths that lead the song to work its way beat by beat, moment by moment to an uncertain resolution; morally ambiguous but very captivating.

Dead in Berlin features on the band’s debut album Dream within a Dream which is out now and available via the duo’s Bandcamp page. The band play in Athens tomorrow, you can find out more about the party on the band’s Facebook page.
