It takes a lot of bravery to cover an 80s pop classic and make it your own and Madelyn Darling did that with her cover of Rockwell’s Somebody’s Watching Me. She’s now released a new original track, the hauntingly stunning Bad Tourist.

The track feels like a half-dreamt travelogue, as the lyrics paint images of love, loss and pain with references to ‘Marlboro kisses from older men’ giving the air of a life lived too young. With an arrangement that uses deft and light synths and rhythms to elicit a sensation of regret and longing, the nearest musical comparison I can come up with to Darling’s sound is Lana Del Rey – not in terms of sound, but more in the way both use everyday events to imbue their music with a sense of melodrama.

Bad Tourist is out now and can be streamed on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify. You can find out more about Madelyn Darling via her Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.
