Sweet Oblivion is the latest release from fire_sign: cellist, vocalist, lyricist and songwriter Sarah Glayzer and drummer, pianist and producer Chris Stickland. Labelling themselves as ‘doomtronica’ the track brings to mind the vocal intensity of ‘Dusty in Memphis era Dusty Springfield backed by a form of electronic soul that’s warm and dark. Check out the video below: it and the song are rather special.
Sweet Oblivion builds slowly, with Glayzer’s vocals drawing the listener in to a track that bristles with the menace of Berlin techno that’s been softened and humanised by her vocals, lyrics and some musical wizardry by Strickland. It’s a sound that’s hard to pigeonhole but very easy to like. Rusty Egan and Simon Raymond rate fire_sign and that’s good enough for me!
