Cronicle is the solo project of Stockholm’s Melanie Mohlkert, who after spending several years fronting pop-punk outfit Tantrum To Blind, took the opportunity to find a new musical direction in a new city, London. Head Up And High is the first fruit of that new artistic expression.
Mohlkert is an alumnus of the same college as artists like Robyn, Icona Pop and Tove Lo. You can hear some of the elements of Scandinavian pop sheen mixed with melancholia on Head Up And High – something that those Scandipop legends utilise so well. The song is catchy and upbeat, but with a slight air of disaffection and wistfulness even when expressing hope. Musically though it operates in a very different sphere, taking the spirit of London classic drum and bass inspired genres and stripping away the bravado to reveal a more human sound. There’s something special going on here!
Head Up And High is out now via Tournament Records, you can also listen to the track on Spotify. Cronicle will be playing The Old Blue Last in London on Tuesday 20th February – check out the event page for more details.
